What have students & parents been saying about New York Jiu Jitsu?

Dear moms,

I have something to share regarding how my family feels about the Young Samurai program at New York Jiu Jitsu. My husband and I had been discussing how to discipline our son Peter Yen (3) – should we encourage him to be humble or aggressive? We would hope that he grows up to be a "man of honor." We don't allow him to hit, even in self-defense, and he can get frustrated by that. Somehow since joining the Mini Samurai class in June 2004, Peter has started to understand control and discipline better, as well as when he can and can’t hit. Being a 3-year-old, of course he doesn't always follow instruction - there have been times when he would just laugh and be silly, not wanting to do a thing in class. At one point I wondered if I was sending him to the class too early and wasting my time and money. Luckily the instructors Jasmine and Betsy are patient, friendly and unintimidating, yet disciplinary and persistent, so he doesn't goof off for too long.

Now Peter asks me often, "When can I go to Jiu Jitsu?!" He's now involved and focused in class at least 90% of the time, which is pretty good for a 3-year-old. After all, the most important thing is still for him to have fun. As for the discipline, it can only come gradually. These classes are building the foundation for the years to come.

Love, Sophia Yang
